Large Animals
Friars Moor is a long established farm veterinary practice, which aims to provide a quality and individually tailored service to all our clients. The large number of dairy cows in our area has led us to develop into a specialist dairy practice. However, our vets have the expertise to treat all classes of livestock, ranging from small ruminants such as sheep, goats and camelids to game birds and poultry.
Herd Fertility
Our vets can provide regular routine visits for fertility management. By checking post calving cows to ensure they are ready to serve, and pregnancy testing cows from 28 days post service using an ultrasound scanner we can help keep the calving interval to a minimum. Every day a cows calving interval is extended is a lost profit, so early detection of fertility problems is crucial.
Access to Interherd a Dairy Herd Management program is available to assist with fertility management. This computer software records calvings, heats, services, PDs and fertility treatments, which helps in producing a variety of action lists, as well as a ‘vet list’ of animals to examine on the next routine visit.
Controlled Breeding Programs can be arranged to synchronise oestrus in groups of heifers or cows. The reproductive cycle is manipulated so that the whole group comes into season and can be served at the same time. This achieves 100% submission rates and eliminates the need for heat detection.
The clinic also offers DIY AI courses including both theory and practice training sessions, on farm and at the surgery.
Herd Health Planning
We can provide a British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA) Herd Health Plan. Health Planning is vital to maintain the productivity of your herd, and our vets are here to work with you, to discuss and advise on disease, parasite control, monitoring vaccinations and herd biosecurity.
Udder Health & Milk Quality
If necessary our farm animal vets can arrange mastitis investigations and advisory visits to ensure the quality of your milk production is at its best. We can monitor cell count trends through the NMR Herd Companion website so that farmers will receive monthly reports identifying problem high cell count cows in need of attention. Further support for mastitis control can be given through teat scoring, observing the parlour routine, evaluation of milking machine function, housing and environment advice.
Lameness and Footcare
Friars Moor understands how important the prevention of lameness on farms is to the productivity and welfare of our client’s herd. We can diagnose and treat individual and herd lameness cases, advising on routine care, such as bathing and digital dermatitis control. Clients are welcome to hire our mobile WOPA crush or use our resident foot trimmer, John Maddocks to help combat foot problems on farm.
Young Stock
Friars Moor understands the importance of youngstock to the future of enterprise. We can advise on all aspects of rearing from general husbandry to the control of specific diseases and preventive medicine. Colostrum management, control of calf scours, parasite control, nutrition advice, body condition scoring and advice on housing environment are some of the services we offer.
Pharmacy
Our Pharmacy stocks a wide range of farm medicines and preventative treatments. To ensure availability of medicines, we ask that you phone through your orders in good time. For products not regularly stocked please place your order before 3pm and it’s likely to be ready for collection the next day at 11am, or if it’s Friday, available for Monday.
Laboratory
Our Sturminster Newton branch supports a fully furnished laboratory with up-to-date equipment allowing us to run a range of diagnostic tests. For many tests an in-house laboratory includes the benefits of rapid results. For specialist tests we have referral facilities.
